Sex Crime Charges Shepard Law Defends

Failure to register as a sex offender. Criminal Procedure § 11-721. A felony or misdemeanor depending on the tier. The maximum penalty can reach 5 years. See our failure to register page.

Indecent exposure under Criminal Law § 11-107 is a related misdemeanor. The maximum penalty is 3 years and a $1,000 fine. It is often charged with other public-order offenses.

Where These Cases Are Heard

Misdemeanor sex crime charges begin in District Court. Baltimore County has District Court locations in Towson, Essex, and Catonsville. The charging document shows which location was assigned. Felony charges, and misdemeanor charges on which the defendant prays a jury trial, are heard in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County. That court sits only in Towson. Because the maximum penalty on most of these charges exceeds 90 days, a jury-trial prayer is available on the misdemeanor counts.
